7/26/25 - WhatNo,Us. In Focus

While Berlin celebrates Pride throughout July, I was lucky enough to catch the biggest event of the month: a vibrant parade cutting through a massive park, with almost too much happening at once. I was there for the experience—and the photos—but after some research, I learned that this year’s Pride was a big deal for Berliners.

In 2025, Germany saw a significant rise in hostility toward queer people. The president also decided to ban the rainbow flag atop the parliament building, resulting in pride popping out strong. The city hit record participation numbers across parades and events, the energy was felt.

Inside the parade was pretty wild for an amateur participant like myself—but wild in the most liberating way possible. It seemed like tradition to use the surrounding forest as a bathroom—or for a coke rendezvous. Just outside that forest, where everyone cool was hanging out, a huge stage hosted queer educational demos, fiery speeches, bursts of dancing, and nonstop cheering from the crowd. Currywurst stands were everywhere, as was a naked guy running around.

When you stepped away from the stage and into that forest, you could feel the underground, piss-scented, free energy that people mean when they talk about Berlin. It was completely unique—people were radiant, ecstatic, and proud to express themselves. Among all this freedom were makeshift DJ sets blasting deep techno and happy families soaking in everything that makes Berlin, Berlin.
