WhatNo,Us. In Focus 5/17/25
Neighboring downtown Los Angeles, across the street from the iconic Jim’s Burgers, is a casual billiards room and bar. But, on occasion, a punk takeover. On this night I faced a thriving scene loaded with expression, creativity, soul, and shared rage. The music isn’t just loud—it’s alive, it fuels the energy of the room and everyone in it. You feel it in your teeth, in your ribs. The crowd moves as one, not in choreographed steps but in some shared, unspoken rhythm. It’s messy and beautiful and surprisingly welcoming, like stumbling into a family reunion where everyone head banging is welcome. I found myself immersed in a cultural pocket I never imagined having the chance to experience, but buoyantly enjoyed every pulsing second. These punk monks express themselves so honestly, it’s inspiring.
